Dr Pai is the President and Chancellor, Manipal University, the President of Manipal Education and Medical Group. He is also Pro Chancellor of Sikkim-Manipal University of Health, Medical & Technological Sciences, President of TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal and Registrar of the Academy of General Education, Manipal.
His father, Dr TMA Pai, was the founder of the Manipal Group, which started with a small university in Manipal, Karnataka way back in 1953. After graduating from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Ramdas Pai went to Temple University, Philadelphia, to earn a post graduate degree in hospital administration.
He returned in 1961 to join KMC as Administrator and accelerated the expansion of the group’s foray into education.
A strong advocate of public-private partnerships, he built on his father’s vision to provide world class education at affordable rates. In 1993, the Indian government granted the group a Deemed University Status, and there was no looking back.
Today, the group is the largest education services provider in India, running six major campuses in five countries. In 2001, he set up the Manipal Foundation to oversee the group’s major philanthropic efforts.
Today, Dr Pai is the President and Chancellor of Manipal University and the President of Manipal Education and Medical Group. Pro vice Chancellor of the Sikkim-Manipal University of Health, Medical & Technological Sciences, Gangtok, Sikkim, President of T A Pai Management Institute, Manipal and Registrar of the Academy of General Education, Manipal.
He’s a member of Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Senate and Syndicate of Mangalore University, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and numerous other educational, business and social organisations.
